Purely Pigment Pastel
The medium is the message in this group show of soft pastels. A much-misunderstood medium, perhaps due to the many forms of pastel such as oil-based, or soft pastels with no oil which can be very soft or quite hard. The artists display the medium's versatile nature with varied subject matter but very different styles - each connected to the other through their adept personal handling of the medium.

“Working from life I find the experience of being there provides the inspiration.”
Lucy Wallace
“I strive with every painting to match my vision for the subject, whether it be animals, birds, or landscapes. Usually, as a consequence, and because of my personality, I paint in a realistic manner and tend towards detail. But more than that, in my mind’s eye, I want to build an emotional connection with my subject in some way, to give it life. This has developed over time and continues to develop with every painting.”
Joan Larson
“Painting is about following my passion for horses and the world around me. Each painting is a personal exploration of my subject and when I paint something, I know it differently. Ultimately it is an intimate process of awareness.”
Faith Love-Robertson
“My work is informed by my background education of Design and Art History. I studied the elements and principles of design which is the lens that focuses my creative efforts. I love the contrast of light and dark, the textural qualities of rough and smooth.
We are fortunate to live in an environment of constant beauty which in turn feeds the creative spirit and supplies the subject matter of my work.
Using the Elements of Design such as value, line, texture and colour I strive to achieve a balanced composition while conveying my inner emotional response to the subject.”
Susan White
“Susan White’s latest works have been informed and inspired by summer gardens. She is especially fascinated with capturing the lights and shadows in the plants and flowers she portrays. She uses soft pastels to paint her realistic botanical portraits.”

"This 'Dust on Butterfly Wings' has captured me from the moment I started using it. Even though I also enjoy working in other mediums, I only have to open my box of pastel jewels, and I'm pulled back in, mess and all, and can't wait to see what happens."
