Stitching the Edges
Artist Statement
I think that the best of everything is found along the edges … the edge of the forest, the edge of the sea, the edge of the cake, the edge of a new day. These are the places and moments when one thing becomes another and where two or more elements meet and interact.
As a young girl learning to sew at school, edges were dangerous places to stray if one failed to tidy them up properly. Frayed edges and wobbly hems were seriously frowned upon, but not anymore, at least not in my world where loose threads, unravelling edges and wonky lines of stitching are part and parcel of the work.
This exhibition is a collection of edges: forests, coastlines, tabletops, wharves and more, sometimes stitched, sometimes not.
