JULI ROCKLIFF
OPEN AIR
Open air is about the freedom of nature, the feeling we have when we have just emerged from a trail that leads to the beach. The anticipation and awe. The reward from the journey.
My own journey has twisted and turned leading me to the beautiful scene that is my life, taking in all the big things and small, being present and finding the joy in each day. Throughout this journey I have always found delight and solace in the natural world to ease me through life, like a balm to my wounds. The garden has been my creative outlet for many years, never ceasing to soothe and excite me. Rivers tugging deep feelings from the my heart, powerful west coast beaches shocking and immense, the understory of forests, they all amaze, keeping me lost in their beauty, lost in the light, lost in the tiniest of growth. I am not the first or the last to paint the beauty of the natural world and I do it little justice but I am grateful to be able to take it in, make the time to paint and have the opportunity to show this small piece of me with all of you.
I am just emerging into the life of an artist who can make the time to have a weekly art practice and I am humbled and elated by what art can lend to life. Excited by how the creative mind works, and what a creative outlet can do for that mind allowing it to grow, flourish in curiosity, grow in courage to just do, just try, just create.
In the words of Mary Oliver: “all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.”
However the creative journey leads me I am happy and humbled to follow it allowing creativity to mold me, augmenting skill, brighten my life, expand my mind and keep my heart joyful.
