IN SANCTUARY: WILD AND RESTORED SPACES OF VANCOUVER ISLAND

In this series “In Sanctuary: Wild & Restored Spaces of Vancouver Island''Nanaimo artist Jasmine Alexander delves into themes of restored, disputed, and reserved lands on Vancouver Island, traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, Snuneymuxw, Snaw-naw-as, Stzuminus people, K’ómoks First Nation, and Coast Salish people. With oil paint and watercolour as her primary media, Alexander explores tensions between ecological restoration, preservation efforts, and the pervasive expansion of land consumption on this picturesque island, particularly through the recreation industry. Alexander invites viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of our physical presence on the land, the ways in which we consume it, and the ways we can contribute to land conservation and restoration.

Jasmine Alexander The Immigrant's Dream. Oil on canvas. 30”x40”. $2,600

In 1959, my grandfather immigrated from Holland to New Westminster on his own, with the hope of building a life and starting a family. As his mind has recently descended into dementia, taking photos of his everyday surroundings has become a way for him to preserve his memory. This painting is inspired by a photo he gave me of the neighbourhood he lived and raised his children. The piece explores a dreamscape interpretation of that space overgrowing, as if the native flora and the residents in the suburban neighbourhood collide into each other.

Jasmine Alexander Green Fee. Oil on canvas. 24" x 36”, SOLD $2,200

I made this painting in my first year of living on Vancouver Island, in Coast Salish and Snuneymuxw territory. It features disputed land, a

beautiful hiking trail called the Cable Bay Trail in southeast Nanaimo, which is being developed into the city's seventh golf course.

There is a petition with over 21,000 signatures currently held by locals to preserve the area. https://savecablebay.org.

Jasmine Alexander The Amenities of the Cable Bay Trail. Oil on canvas. 36”x48”. $3,400

With its rich ecosystems, old growth trees, and paths that lead to coastal views (with frequent orca sightings), the beautiful Cable Bay Trail is at risk of being clear cut to become Nanaimo’s seventh golf course.

There is a petition with over 21,000 signatures currently held by locals to preserve the area. https://savecablebay.org.

Jasmine Alexander Kus-kus-sum. Oil on board. 12”x15.5” framed. $520

From Project Watershed’s website: “As part of our estuary stewardship, Project Watershed has committed to the restoration of the Field Sawmill site in partnership with the K’ómoks First Nation and City of Courtenay. We have been given a name for the site by the K’ómoks First Nation and are calling it Kus-kus-sum. Once restored Kus-kus-sum will create 8.3 acres of fish and wildlife habitat, provide recreational and educational opportunities, help mitigate climate change, attenuate localized flooding and put indigenous reconciliation into action.” My painting is a dreamlike interpretation of what the waterway could look like fully restored in the future.

A portion of the proceeds from this piece will be donated to Project Watershed.
