Norma Emerson
IN TANDEM
IN TANDEM with the Emersons is an art show consisting of Norma's paintings and Don's photographs. They have been married since 1980 and have always supported each other's creative endeavors with generosity of time, a critical eye and affirmations.
While raising their two children, and travelling to the prairies, if Don wanted to spend two to three hours under the black cloth hood of his four by five view camera photographing old granaries, or the light on snow fences along railway tracks, Norma and the kids would go for a walk, pick silver willow berries, and entertain themselves. At home, when Norma wanted to paint, Don would get the stroller out and take the kids down to the beach for a few hours. Can you pick out art that dates back to the early 80's, or the current day?
Some of Norma's themes tie into justice for the environment, beautiful Irises, in memory of her late mom, treasured family members, and structured Escher-like design work. Dons' themes focus on still-lifes, encounters with Indigenous and Irish cultures, and images captured in quiet moments. Size, symbolism, balance, light and juxtaposition are all key elements. Use your imagination with tiny shells brought into contemporary times by the use of an electron microscope.
Can you tell by viewing the show what Don is passionate about, or what brings joy to Norma? Do you see similar images interpreted differently?
Don and Norma hope you enjoy the show and are inspired to express your own creativity.
