PHIL HARRISON
DREAMSCAPES
Curated by Emily Harrison
Phil Harrison (1942–2022) was born and grew up in logging camps around Port Alberni, BC. He attended Vancouver Art School (known today as Emily Carr University) and Slade School of Art (London, England) before moving to Hornby Island in 1972.
Heavily influenced by his surroundings, the geography of Hornby constantly reoccurs in Harrison’s imagery along with themes from his imagination and subconscious. The works included “Dreamscapes” feature scenes of West Coast marine culture through a lens of altered realities and psychedelia. The majority of the paintings in this selection were made by Harrison in the 1970s when he was living in a one-room shack above the shores of Big Tribune Beach.
