Jeff Wilson
I want to produce paintings that give an immediate visual impact. I prefer recognizable subjects, but they can be pretty boring, so try to capture a dynamic composition & vibrant colours. I dominantly work in acrylics, as they are forgiving, quick and give me the colour intensity I am looking for.
I grew up in Scotland and trained as a geologist before immigrating to Canada. These twin influences seem to shape my work & get a lot of ideas from the close observation of Canadian landscape and built forms. This tends towards work with geometric, structural compositions, depicting quirky aspects of Canadian life that often go unnoticed.
These influences provide the background for that from a chance encounter of light, colour & geometry that gives the final composition. I typically carry a camera when I think conditions might be conducive, and hope for a spark of inspiration. Such images provide the foundation to a given work, expressing a specific spontaneity & movement. Building on this foundation, I build the painting with the inspection and discrimination required by the discipline. When it works, the resulting painting will combine formal rigour, freshness & dynamic colours.
