Jeff Wilson
Wolf Willow
This collection is inspired by my artist residence at the Stegner House, in Eastend SK, and operated by the Eastend Arts Council.. The House is the childhood home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Wallace Stegner, whose semi-autobiographical book “Wolf Willow” gives the exhibition its title.
The Frenchman River Valley sits south of the Cypress Hills, separated from the rest of Saskatchewan from the main highways and railroads that run north of the Hill. This relative isolation has largely sheltered the area from recent development, preserving aspects of traditional prairie life in an area that has witnessed many of the events that shaped the Canadian West. Land use has necessarily evolved with time, but the process has been gentle enough to leave a remarkable record of historical events.
This exhibition illustrates a unique part of the Canadian Prairies that combines a remarkable landscape with a remarkably well-preserved record of traditional rural prairie life.
